Owner Builder Insurance

Owner builders face a unique set of risks and responsibilities and appropriate insurance is essential. Insurance coverage of the following areas is necessary:

Fire, storm, vandalism and theft of materials
Any existing structures not part of the project
Public Liability for damage to other people’s property as well as injury to people who enter the site
Public Liability for vacant land prior to construction
Workers Compensation to protect against action taken by a contractor or sub-contactor
Home Indemnity to protect a subsequent purchaser against construction faults

It is essential to take out Owner Builder Insurance before any work is started as otherwise the project will be difficult to insure. Standard policies run for 12 months but, if the construction takes longer, extensions are usually available.
